Reader Response #2

September 24, 2009

Mirroring Ourselves by Daniel Goleman and Susan Bordon
I think everyone can relate to this piece in one way or another. I can relate because I am very picky with the clothes that I wear. I will not wear clothing if I do not like the brand and that is just like how others may think their overweight when they look perfectly fine. I see myself looking better in clothes with the brand I like, but in reality its all in my head. That is the exact same with the people that look fine and think they need to lose weight.
I agree with the text because people try to do many different things to look better. Many people take fat burners to try and make themself look better. It may help them look better in the present, but nobody knows what they are doing to the inside of their body. The same goes for diets because even though diets help lose weight they may also be bad for one. I also agree that students that are more attractive get more attention from a teacher. But I think that is only temporary until the teacher gets to know the person. For example if there is a person that sags there pants and wears really baggy clothing and a person that is dressed casual; the person dressed casual will be more approachable. After getting to know both the person that is always dressed casual may have the worst attitude and may get less attention as time goes on.
I learned many different things about physical attraction and why people think they need to be attractive. My opinions have not changed after reading this article because I have always felt that nobody should change for anyone.

Reader-Response The World Of The Image

September 17, 2009

This piece of The World Of The Image by Trudy Smoke and Alan Robbins is about how people view things in their own way.  The text has a good perspective on vision and I can relate to it in a couple different ways.   Many people tend to see things the way they want and an example  I can give of myself would be from the past.  As a kid I would see certain shapes and pictures that clouds formed, but when I would have someone else look they couldn’t see any shapes or pictures that I saw.   Which is a result of people looking at things their own way.

I agree with the text in this chapter.  Everyone is unique and see things differently.  If everyone saw stuff the same way then we would all be doing the same things.  For example I may think a certain job is the best job one could do by seeing the things they do on a daily basis, but another person may think it’s a boring job and would never try it.  This is why there is so much variety in the world.

“He sees little children, and zoo animals and domestic ones…”(20).  This qoute is an example of people seeing things in their own way.  This peson was in a car accident and suffered brain damage and that is what caused him to start hallucinating.  Another person could have had the same injury, but it would not be for sure he would hallucinate those things or even hallucinate any thing.  “10 percent is in the eye and 90 percent is mental” (4).  This is exactly why every one percieves things in their own way because 90 percent of it comes from the brain and nobody has the same brain and thinks the same way.

I learned a few new things about different parts of the eye and how they work.   I also knew certain things, like how the brain is the biggest factor of why people see things in their own way.   My views have grew stronger on the fact that every one percieves things differently.
